Orient has updated its popular Bambino dress watch, making key improvements to an already well-regarded model. Known for offering quality and style at affordable prices, the Bambino has gained a devoted following among watch enthusiasts. The latest version builds on this reputation by addressing previous critiques and adding new features.

In 2022, Orient reduced the Bambino's case size from over 40mm to 38.4mm, with a lug-to-lug length of 44mm. This change made the watch more suitable as a dress piece, appealing to those who found the original too large. Now, Orient has introduced a small seconds complication to this smaller case, replacing the central seconds hand with a subdial at 6 o'clock.

This new model uses Orient's in-house Caliber F6222 movement, which, like its predecessor, offers hacking and hand-winding capabilities. The small seconds feature not only adds visual interest but also allows for a slimmer case—12mm thick compared to the previous 12.5mm. Applied Roman numeral indices contribute to the watch's classic aesthetic.

Four versions are available: black dial with silver small seconds, white dial with blue hands, cream dial with blue hands, and a gold-tone case model with a silver dial. All come with stainless steel cases, display casebacks, and leather straps resembling crocodile skin.

The black dial version provides a strong contrast, making it easy to read while maintaining an elegant appearance. The white dial with blue hands offers a fresh, crisp look reminiscent of nautical themes. For those preferring warmth, the cream dial with blue hands presents a softer palette. The gold-tone case option, paired with a silver dial, caters to those wanting a more luxurious feel without a significant price increase.

Each model features a mineral crystal covering both the dial and the exhibition caseback. While not as scratch-resistant as sapphire, mineral crystal helps keep costs down without compromising clarity. The display back allows owners to view the automatic movement in action, a feature often absent in watches at this price point.

Water resistance is rated at 30 meters, which protects against splashes but is not suitable for swimming or diving. This is standard for dress watches, which are not typically designed for aquatic use.

The Caliber F6222's power reserve of 40 hours means the watch can be taken off on Friday evening and still be running when put back on Monday morning, a convenient feature for those who switch to different watches on weekends. The movement's inclusion of hacking seconds (the ability to stop the seconds hand when setting the time) and hand-winding option (as opposed to relying solely on the rotor for winding) are usually found in more expensive watches.

Pricing is set at $340 for standard models and $365 for the gold-tone version. Given Orient's history of discounts, consumers may find even lower prices. These watches are expected to arrive at U.S. retailers soon, offering a compelling option for those seeking an automatic dress watch that combines traditional design, practical features, and affordability.

The Orient Bambino has long been recommended as an entry point into mechanical watches or as an affordable dress watch for seasoned collectors. With these updates, Orient strengthens that position. The smaller case size caters to current preferences and traditional dress watch proportions. The addition of a small seconds dial not only introduces functionality but also variety to the Bambino line, giving consumers more choice.

For the price, buyers receive a mechanical watch from an established brand with an in-house movement, classic styling, and now improved wearability. The Bambino competes with quartz watches in this price range while offering the smooth sweep and character of an automatic.

These improvements demonstrate Orient's commitment to refining its products based on consumer feedback. By maintaining affordability while upgrading design and mechanics, Orient ensures the Bambino remains relevant in a market where tastes evolve but the desire for value persists.

As these new models reach consumers, they're likely to uphold the Bambino's reputation as a gateway to higher-end horology and a staple in versatile watch collections. Whether paired with a suit or worn to elevate casual attire, the latest Orient Bambino continues to punch above its weight, proving that refinement need not come at a premium.
