SKX007 vs. SKX009: Is there any difference between these dive watches?
If you’re already a veteran modder, you might assume that we’re clickbaiting with this title. But for people who are just coming into the Seiko modding scene, this is a genuine question that deserves a clarifying answer. After all, Seiko’s naming convention can be rather confusing, so much so that it falls to us fans to assign nicknames to their watches for easier recognition and discussion.
The Seiko SKX series has long been a favorite among dive watch enthusiasts, offering robust performance and classic styling at an accessible price point. Two models in particular, the SKX007 and SKX009, have achieved cult status in the watch community and more so in the Seiko modding sub-niche. While these siblings share much of their DNA, there are subtle differences that set them apart. This article will explore the similarities and differences between these two iconic timepieces, helping you understand what makes each one unique.
History and Background
The SKX series traces its roots back to Seiko's long history of producing reliable dive watches. Introduced in the mid-1990s, the SKX007 and SKX009 were designed as successors to the popular 7002 series. These watches quickly became favorites among divers and watch enthusiasts alike, thanks to their quality construction, reliable automatic movement, and attractive price point.
For over two decades, the SKX007 and SKX009 remained in production, largely unchanged. This consistency contributed to their legendary status and made them a common recommendation for entry-level mechanical dive watches. However, in 2019, Seiko officially discontinued the SKX line, much to the dismay of fans worldwide. Despite this, both models remain highly sought after on the secondary market, with prices often exceeding their original retail value.
Similarities between SKX007 and SKX009
At first glance, the SKX007 and SKX009 appear nearly identical, and indeed, they share most of their key features:
Case dimensions and design: Both watches feature the same 42.5mm stainless steel case with a thickness of 13.25mm. The distinctive cushion-shaped case design, with its crown at 4 o'clock, is identical on both models. This size is in the Goldilock’s zone for many wrist sizes which added to its mass appeal.
Movement: Both utilize Seiko's reliable 7S26 automatic movement. This workhorse caliber is known for its durability and low maintenance requirements, though it lacks hand-winding and hacking capabilities. For this reason, Seiko modders often decide to upgrade to an NH35 movement or better.
Water resistance: True to their dive watch heritage, both the SKX007 and SKX009 offer 200 meters of water resistance, making them suitable for serious underwater use. No need to worry if your watch will survive a leisurely swim on the beach!

Day-date complication: Both models feature a day and date display at the 3 o'clock position, with the day available in English and a second language (typically Arabic or Japanese).
Lume quality: Seiko's proprietary LumiBrite is used on the hands and indices of both watches, providing excellent visibility in low-light conditions and one feature that’s highly enjoyed by fans. Their special blend appears white in normal light, and glows green in the dark.
These shared characteristics form the foundation of what makes the SKX series so popular. The robust build quality, reliable movement, and true dive watch capabilities are present in both models, making either an excellent choice for those seeking a dependable timepiece.
Differences between SKX007 and SKX009

While the SKX007 and SKX009 share many features, their primary differences lie in their aesthetics:
Bezel color: The most noticeable difference is the bezel color. The SKX007 features a classic black bezel insert, while the SKX009 sports a distinctive navy blue and red "Pepsi" bezel. This two-tone bezel on the SKX009 is reminiscent of the GMT-Master II from Rolex, giving it a more playful and colorful appearance.
Dial color: The dial color also differs between the two models. The SKX007 has a black dial, providing a monochromatic look when paired with its black bezel. In contrast, the SKX009 features a dark blue dial that complements its blue and red bezel.
Aesthetic impact: These color differences significantly impact the overall look of each watch. The SKX007, with its black dial and bezel, presents a more understated and versatile appearance. It's often considered the more "classic" choice, easily pairing with a wide range of outfits and occasions. The SKX009, with its blue dial and Pepsi bezel, has a bolder, more eye-catching aesthetic. It tends to stand out more and can add a pop of color to one's wrist.
Readability: While both watches offer excellent legibility, some users report that the SKX007's black dial provides slightly better contrast against the white markers and hands. However, this difference is minimal and largely comes down to personal preference and lighting conditions.
Though not included in the title, it is worth noting that there is yet one more model in this trio, the black and orange SKX011, that is brighter than the previous two thanks to its vibrant dial. It’s not as widely discussed as its first two models, so we would speculate that over its lifetime, it was just not as popular as its two brothers, though we find no fault in its design and guess it just falls down to personal preferences.
It’s also worth mentioning that while it may seem that the next model in this series is logically the SKX013, it's a different size from the SKX007/009/011 which makes it a completely different watch line. Hope we spared you some confusion!
Does it make any difference when modding?
In terms of modding, both the SKX007 and SKX009 (and by extension, the SKX011) are virtually identical, and parts for one will work with the other.
