Without a doubt, Seiko is a favorite with the watch modding community because of the huge number of watch spare parts available for the brand. The mod parts range from hands, dials, bezel inserts, and bezels, to cases, crystals, crowns, and of course, movements.

The NH in-house movement line has a powerful position in the industry due to its long-lasting performance and excellent quality since its launch in 2008. A SKX007 mod can use a 7S26 movement, but the NH series offers modders a lot more.  

If you are a fan of this Japanese brand, you know that Seiko NH calibers are not only regarded as one of Seiko’s most affordable mechanical movements, but also serve as a workhorse for mods due to their durability. 

For instance, modders can upgrade SKX mods by swapping the 7S26 for an NH36 movement that could make a world of difference in the overall usability, adding key features such as hand-winding, hacking, and magnetic resistance.

ETA 2824-2

The ETA 2824-2 is a workhorse movement loved by collectors, enthusiasts, and watchmakers alike as they are durable, reliable, and easy to produce.

First released in 1982, the ETA 2824-2 has fairly standard dimensions, with a diameter of 25.6mm and a thickness of 4.6mm. This Swiss caliber is self-winding, but it also hacks and handwinds. You can find this caliber on a lot of well-known watch brands like Tissot, or Tudor.

Over the years, many brands used ETA movements as they have proven to be extremely reliable and accurate. The ETA 2824-2 is also easier to service than others in the same price point. The movement is also easy to work with, and there are loads of parts on the market. 

Sellita SW200

In 2003, when ETA’s rights to the design of the 2824-2 caliber reached their expiration date, some other watch manufacturers created their own versions of the movement. The Sellita SW200 is widely considered Sellita’s competitor to the ETA 2824-2.

Although the Sellita SW200 and the ETA 2824-2 are quite similar in appearance, there are still little differences. 

While the ETA 2824-2 has only 25 jewels, the Sellita SW200 uses 26 jewels to help in reducing friction. In addition, the Sellita SW200's sharper rotor ridges make it look more elaborate than the ETA.

Miyota 9015/90S5

Compared to commonly-used watch movements like the Swiss ETA calibres, Miyota movements are a lot cheaper and more affordable which is one of the main reasons why they are used by watch brands worldwide. 

Today, Miyota's movements are used in a lot of famous watch brands, such as Citizen, Casio, Timex, or Bulova, and are also used by other watch microbrands.

One of the company’s most famous calibres is the 9015. The Miyota 9015 uses 28 jewels and comes with a hacking feature, allowing you to set the time accurately.

Like other movements from Miyota, the Miyota 9015 is known for being affordable. It offers an economical price for third-party watch companies, which is why it is very widely used in different microbrand watches.

As said, the price of the Miyota 9015 is quite reasonable, and can be found for less than $100, so you will have little problem getting an affordable replacement. This is a great choice for those who are on a tight budget but want a practical timepiece.

In addition, the Miyota caliber 90S5, with the extra finishing and the open balance design, is part of the 90 series of movements which includes the 9015. The movement is made to be used in ‘open heart’ style mods, which look amazing with the right dial!
