Seiko modding might be a primarily solo hobby. Yes, it’s complicated, but you’ll almost never need another pair of hands to help you finish a watch build. From planning the design to sourcing the parts, to the actual assembly, it certainly is something that one can enjoy alone. But do you have to? Like many of the fun hobbies in life, it’s always more fun when you’re doing it with like-minded people that you can freely exchange ideas with.

Whether you’re new to Seiko mods and want to glean wisdom from the pros, or a seasoned modder who wants to get fresh perspectives, a workshop within your local watch community can be a fun gathering. It’s not too common though, how can you organize one to make sure everyone will have a good time? Here are some of our suggestions.

Why Host a Watch Modding Workshop?

Before diving into the logistics, let’s talk about why you should consider hosting a workshop in the first place. Watch modding is a niche hobby, but it’s growing rapidly. Enthusiasts are always looking for ways to learn new techniques, discover new build ideas, and connect with others who share their passion. A workshop provides a hands-on, collaborative environment where people can learn new skills, share their personal tips and tricks, and have a better appreciation for watches in general.

Step 1: Decide on Your Workshop’s Focus

The first step is to define what your workshop will cover. Watch modding has quite a bit of processes involved, so it’s important to narrow down the focus to make the event manageable for attendees. Here are a few ideas:

  1. Beginner-Friendly Modding: Teach the basics, like changing bezels and insert, and how to choose a suitable strap for the build.

  2. Advanced Techniques: Dive into more complex mods, such as movement swaps or custom lume work. This more technical workshop can add to the arsenal of even long time modders..

  3. Full Builds Workshop: More experienced modders can guide a group of newbies through their first full build.

Step 2: Find the Right Venue

The venue sets the tone for your workshop, so choose wisely. You’ll need a space that’s well lit, since Seiko mods require precision when handling the parts. You’ll also want a place with a large conference-room style table so there’s enough room for participants to work comfortably without accidentally mixing parts with the other modders. For accessibility, do make sure that the meet up location has ample parking or public transport options. If you’re working at a commercial establishment like a cafe, make sure that you inform the management beforehand to make sure you are not disturbing their normal operations.

If you’re hosting a smaller, more familiar group composed of friends and relatives, your home might work too!

Step 3: Gather the Necessary Tools and Supplies

Depending on the arrangements, participants may bring their own tools and supplies, or the host may be providing these for a fee. You can also partner with a local watchmaker or an online parts supplier to sponsor the event and provide materials in exchange for a promotion.

As the host, you’ll need to ensure that participants have access to everything they need. Here’s a basic checklist:

  • Tools: Case openers, hand setters, tweezers, screwdrivers, and movement holders.

  • Supplies: Replacement parts like bezels and crystal gaskets.

  • Cleaning Supplies: Rodico putty, microfiber cloths, and isopropyl alcohol.

Step 4: Promote Your Workshop

Once you’ve nailed down the details, it’s time to spread the word. Facebook is a good way to organize the meetup, as you can create an “event” with all the details needed, plus you can also see how many people are interested in going.

An even better way to promote the event is through WatchCrunch, which has a built-in feature for hosting watch meet ups. The social media app is already a gathering spot for watch enthusiasts, so getting a few people to meet in person is just another step! More than 200 events have been hosted so far, with some communities meeting multiple times already. Check it out to learn how people are coordinating these events.

When promoting, be clear about what attendees can expect. Include details like the cost, skill level required, and what they’ll take home, be it a modded watch, a set of tools, or just the experience of hanging out with fellow watch enjoyers.

Step 5: Plan the Agenda

A well-structured agenda ensures that your workshop runs smoothly and stays on track. If you’re hosting a Seiko modding workshop where attendees can build a complete watch, here’s what the day might look:

  1. Welcome and Introductions: Start with a brief introduction and an overview of the day’s activities.

  2. Demo and Instruction: Walk participants through the modding process step by step.

  3. Hands-On: Let participants try their hand at modding on their own spaces, while also guiding them.

  4. Troubleshooting: If working with people that are new to the hobby, expect there to be questions and a few broken parts!

  5. Wrap Up: End with a casual discussion and let everyone appreciate their work.

Keep the atmosphere relaxed and encourage questions throughout the session. The goal is to make everyone feel comfortable and confident about Seiko mods!

Wrap Up

Hosting a watch modding workshop can be a challenge especially at the start, but it’s also an incredible opportunity to share your passion and inspire others. With careful planning, the right tools, and a welcoming attitude, you can create an event that’s both educational and enjoyable.

Happy modding!
